G-code settings explained

Most cutting apps share the same group of G-code settings. This page explains each one and lists the codes the apps write, so you can check them against your machine's controller.

Cutting type

Choose GAS (oxy-fuel), PLASMA or MARK. With GAS and PLASMA the program cuts the holes first and the outer contour last, so the part does not move before its holes are cut. With MARK the order of holes does not matter, so the app orders the marks along the shortest route instead.

DXF arc as polyline

Yes turns every arc in the drawing into short straight segments, written as G01 moves. Choose No to keep arcs as G02 (clockwise) and G03 (counter-clockwise) moves, if your controller supports them.

DXF text as vectors

Yes turns TEXT entities in the drawing into polylines made of short straight segments (G01), so the text is cut or marked like any other shape.

Kerf distance

The radius of the cut, usually half the width of the kerf your torch, laser or tool leaves. The toolpath is offset by this distance so the parts keep their drawn size. The kerf is ignored when the cutting type is MARK.

Lead in and lead out distance

The length of the move into the cut before the contour starts, and out of it after the contour ends. Piercing and stopping away from the part keeps the edge clean.

Coordinates

Absolute coordinates are measured from the program zero; incremental ones from the previous position. The third option writes absolute positions with incremental arc centres (I and J), which some older controllers expect.

Setting Code written
Absolute G90 M1003
Incremental G91

Measurement unit

Sets the unit of every number in the program, and writes the matching code at the start.

Setting Code written
inch G20
mm G21
cm G22

M codes on

Yes writes machine codes that switch the torch, plasma or marker on and off around every cut, and ends the program with an end code. Choose No if your controller adds them itself.

Setting Code written
Gas on M1002
Gas off M08
Plasma on M15
Plasma off M16
Marker on M09
Marker off M10
End of program M02
